APA Atlanta began holding women’s photo-industry events three years ago to confront the obstacles that women photographers often face in being hired for advertising work. The idea was that together, women can go farther, change the industry and get a seat at the table.

Building on the first session of Dismantling the Gaze, which presented the history of gendered tropes and stereotypes in visual culture, this panel discussion looks at the tradition of subverting those constructed hierarchies through artistic strategies used in the ICP Museum’s exhibition Multiply, Identify, Her.

This program launches ICP’s new series, Dismantling the Gaze, which considers looking, power, and visual culture in the #MeToo moment.

Inspired by ICP’s exhibition Henri Cartier-Bresson: The Decisive Moment, this panel discussion assembles contemporary street photographers and asks them to relate the moments, subjects, and scenes that define their own “decisive moments.”

This discussion, hosted by Jillian Steinhauer as part of our ongoing series Optics: A New Way of Seeing Contemporary Culture, examines contemporary branding, and moreover its visual output, as a form of social, cultural, political, and economic exchange and production.

In conversation with Paul Rogers, ICP’s director of content and public programming, photographers Sheila Pree Bright and Danny Wilcox Frazier explore the role of images in mediating identity politics, promoting or interrogating cross-cultural (mis)understandings, and provoking social change.

Louisiana’s State Penitentiary, the largest maximum-security prison in the United States, is also known as “Angola,” as it sits on the site of a former plantation with a slave population originating from Angola, Africa. This panel convenes three photographers and one writer who made work about the notorious prison in a state that has the highest rate of incarceration of any place in the world.
